Visit the Linge Memorial,
a history lesson
not to be missed
The visit to Mémorial du Linge is divided into three parts. After the screening of a film recounting the tragedy at Le Linge, you continue your discovery through the museum. An impressive collection of artefacts found on the site is on display, providing a vivid record of the period. Finally, explore the outer trenches. In their silence, they arouse deep respect. They also invite reflection, in an exceptional natural setting.

The Museum
Since its opening in June 1981, the Musée du Linge has constantly evolved to offer visitors an enriching experience. Every year, new thematic showcases and temporary exhibitions round out the visit, testifying to the ongoing commitment of the team of volunteers who do their utmost to guarantee a quality visit. These developments are partly made possible by collections purchased, loaned or donated by families. We would like to thank them all.

The video
Extensively documented, this 20-minute film begins by situating this confrontation in the geopolitical context of the time . It then plunges you into the heart of the repeated assaults by the Alpine chasseurs, from July to October 1915.

The museum
The museum is laid out over two floors. A chronological tour takes you from Alsace's entry into the war in August 1914 to the Armistice in November 1918. A reconstruction of a German trench after the Alpine assault of July 1915 is on display. A 65 mm mountain cannon is on display, with its wheels turned and hooped in 2018 by the wheelwrights of the Ungersheim ecomuseum.
On the lower floor, the two adversaries are presented in their period equipment, along with a reconstructed scene of a French aid station. Thematic display cases (winter, water supply, the painter's studio, animals, children and war...) are dedicated to uniformology, weaponry and soldiers' daily lives.
The staging is accompanied by explanatory panels in three languages.

The battlefield
Today's battlefield is a living witness to the history that unfolded here over almost 4 years, in its 'end-of-war' state.
3 routes with different levels of difficulty have been laid out in the heart of the trenches. All pass over the northern spur of the Linge ridge, offering panoramic views as far as the Chateau du Haut-Koenigsbourg. An orientation table helps you spot the surrounding peaks. The tour is marked by explanatory panels in 3 languages.
Open to all, duration 30 to 45 minutes
Medium-difficulty route, duration 45 minutes to 1h15 (recommended for school visits - good shoes recommended)
Difficult route, duration 1h15 to 1h45 (good shoes essential, some gradients)
In summer, guided tours and evening visits are offered.
Your visit in pictures
"Well laid-out memorial/museum presenting the forces involved in the battle during WW1. The visit is pleasant and the explanations clear. After the interior visit, the walk in the trenches is very interesting, it allows you to imagine the life of all these men whose "meager" equipment we saw just before in the museum. I recommend it.v"
Summer guided tours
In July and August, we offer guided tours lasting around 3 hours. Our volunteer guides, passionate about history, will show you around the site and tell you a piece of its tormented history. An immersive and moving experience awaits you. Please note that the level of difficulty of the hike is high, with steep ascents and descents.
